Adult Japanese

Choose an adult Japanese course around life, travel or work

Define what you need to do in Japanese, then combine structured learning, live conversation and exam preparation around that purpose.

Who this guide is for

Adults starting or returning to Japanese and preparing to travel, live or work in Japan.

Name the situations you need to handle

Checking in, changing an appointment, explaining a problem and joining a work discussion involve different vocabulary, listening and levels of politeness. List three recurring tasks and distinguish reading an answer from responding in the moment. A beginner can practise a small meaningful exchange without waiting to finish every grammar topic.

Connect structured knowledge with conversation

Japanese Compass organises an adult pathway through J0–J7, separating Core, scene-based speaking and exam or external-textbook alignment. Core knowledge helps you understand variations; a task checks whether you can use it. An exam goal adds specific needs. Combine these around your priorities rather than treating every available material as compulsory.

Observe understanding and a second response

In a trial, ask for a simple situation and then a change of time, person or condition. Notice whether you understand the key point, can ask for clarification and can try again after feedback. Adult Japanese is planned around 40-minute live lessons; available formats are confirmed in the product proposal.

Try a concrete task

Start with “予約を変更したいです。” Then add the original time, a preferred replacement and a response saying that no appointment is available. The task is understanding, confirming details and deciding the next step, not memorising one isolated phrase.

Before choosing a course

  • List three situations and identify the most difficult one.
  • Ask how Core, scene practice and exam preparation connect.
  • Use a changed condition to evaluate a trial lesson.

Common questions

Must I finish kana before any conversation?

Writing and pronunciation foundations matter, but they can develop alongside supported short exchanges. The starting point determines the balance.

What if I know grammar but speak slowly?

Identify whether the bottleneck is retrieval, sentence building, listening response or politeness choices, then practise it in a situation.

Are J0–J7 official JLPT levels?

No. They describe an internal learning pathway. Exam alignment does not award an official qualification.
