Choose a Singapore Math course by explanation and transfer

Look beyond answers and speed: can the child identify relationships, choose a representation, explain it and adapt when a problem changes?

Who this guide is for

Parents comparing primary mathematics courses and seeking to understand Singapore Math teaching.

Identify the actual difficulty

Calculation fluency, reading a question, seeing a relationship and checking an answer are different needs. A child explaining one solution can reveal more than an error count. The iMentoris Singapore Math pathway is planned across P1–P6; entry should consider current understanding rather than automatically match a school year label.

Ask what a representation makes clearer

The connection between objects, pictures and symbols shows how CPA supports understanding. Attractive diagrams are not enough: the learner should explain parts, wholes and units and why a representation supports an equation. A model should reveal a relationship instead of becoming another memorised drawing routine.

Include checking and a changed problem

After an initial solution, change a number, move the unknown or alter a story condition. Can the child explain whether the method still applies? Teacher questions, the child’s reasoning and a useful next assessment make the learning visible. Product availability, material scope and class format require confirmation.

Try a concrete task

A bar model shows 18 objects in total, with 7 in one group. Find the other group, then change the question to ask how many more are in that group. Observe whether the child reconsiders the unknown rather than automatically repeating an operation.

Before choosing a course

  • Use an explanation to distinguish calculation from understanding.
  • Check the connection between objects, diagrams and equations.
  • Change one condition and observe transfer.

Common questions

Is Singapore Math just drawing bars?

No. A bar model is one representation alongside number understanding, operations, explanation, checking and transfer.

Must a child start at the school year level?

The year label is a reference. Concept understanding and problem-solving evidence help determine the starting point.

Does the course guarantee school results?

A course name cannot guarantee an outcome. Agree goals and review specific evidence of progress.
