Who this guide is for
Parents comparing live online English courses and trying to understand assessment and progression.
Children of the same age may start differently
One child may recognise many words but struggle with a simple follow-up. Another may speak confidently while needing help organising sentences. Record what the child can do independently, what support helps and what happens when that support is reduced. A nervous first encounter is not a permanent description of ability.
Connect levels to things a child can do
The existing iMentoris Young Learners pathway includes GT L3–L8 Core, GTX contextual transfer and TSC supplementary themes. Ask how a stage develops short responses into reasons, explanations or discussion instead of only asking about word counts. Suitability and entry point are confirmed through assessment and the available product.
Look for evidence across lessons
Observe whether the child understands, responds personally and receives adjusted support. Materials, practice and feedback should help a parent see how one lesson connects to the next. Entertainment, rewards and fluent repetition are not enough to show that a child can use language in a changed situation.
Try a concrete task
Ask the child to choose a weekend activity and give one reason. Begin with pictures or a sentence frame. Change the activity and reduce the prompt on the next attempt. Comparing the support needed can reveal more than counting correct answers alone.
Before choosing a course
- Ask which responses were independent and which needed prompting.
- Have a learning level explained through observable listening and speaking tasks.
- Review feedback and the next step as well as the classroom atmosphere.
Common questions
Should every child reach the same level at the same age?
No. Exposure, comprehension, expression and task performance all affect the starting point.
Does silence in a trial mean low ability?
Not necessarily. An unfamiliar setting can affect participation. Consider accessible tasks, supported responses and further observation.
Should a parent sit beside the child throughout?
The amount of support depends on age, independence and lesson requirements. The goal is growing participation by the child rather than answers supplied by an adult.
